Contract for the Web

In 2009 the inventor of the Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee established The World Wide Web Foundation to:

“advance the open Web as a public good and a basic right.”

Ten years later, half the world can’t get online; and those that can are finding that their privacy, their democracy and their rights are under constant attack.

Hence, the Foundation has launched the Contract for the Web.

There are 9 principles enshrined in the contract:

  1. Ensure everyone can connect to the Internet

  2. Keep all of the Internet available, all of the time

  3. Respect and protect people’s fundamental online privacy and data rights

  4. Make the Internet affordable and accessible to everyone

  5. Respect and protect people’s privacy and personal data to build online trust

  6. Develop technologies that support the best in humanity and challenge the worst

  7. Be creators and collaborators on the Web

  8. Build strong communities that respect civil discourse and human dignity

  9. Fight for the Web

I’m sure @QuincyLarson would agree that these principles very much align with the principles behind freeCodeCamp.

If you’ve got 5 minutes free, please take a look at the principles in more depth at Contract for the Web.

And if you agree with them, you can also add your name to those that have already endorsed the contract, by signing up here.

Thanks
