Empty string for applied visual design. not functioning well

it looks like you are defining something like

heart:after

and

heart:before

but you need two colons in between like this instead

heart::after

try that and then recheck

thanks for the reply, but I think the problem is on the browser. I was first using brave browser then change to google chrome it works fine without changing anything at all on the code.
