Short animated GIF screencast

How do I make a short animated GIF of me doing something on my computer? For example in Quincy Larson’s Medium article’s at the end where he has the demo of liking his article, or as commonly seen in other blogs/articles where someone is showing a short demo of doing something on their computer?

I use recordit and then compress it. There are probably better ways, but this does the job for me.

I was using Gyazo a lot when I was doing some game dev to show art progress,It does simple screenshots and gifs too plus, it automatically host it to share quickly !
